The Alexander City Council’s public safety committee reported that phone scams impersonating law enforcement are appearing in the area and urged residents not to provide payment information to callers who claim to be from police or other agencies.
Councilor Eric Brown, speaking for the public safety committee, said residents are receiving calls that claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service, the Alexander City Police Department, the Tappas County Sheriff’s Office or similar agencies and ask for credit-card or prepaid-card numbers. “Do not give them any information,” Brown said, adding that no law-enforcement agency will solicit money for bonds, fees or fines over the telephone.
Brown also reported that the fire department’s Haynes unit is at the hospital to assist with runs the city cannot cover, and that Eric Hacob is working with the county to finalize funds for an ambulance that is ready to be delivered. The Alexander City Police Department encouraged people interested in careers with the department to contact Michael Bryan at the police department for recruitment information.
The report was informational; no council action was required during the meeting.
