Commission staff said the city remains on track to carry out its spring planting event on the 12th and that TreeWhip seedlings should arrive at the nursery by the end of next week or the following week. Staff said they will confirm delivery dates with the vendor and that volunteers, including local school science classes, will serve as planters and help bag tree whips.
Staff asked commissioners to bring their own shovels if possible and said the mayor's office has distributed a press release. The commission discussed logistics for the JK/JFK planting and agreed to hold a full pre-planting meeting. Staff also asked members to forward any questions about the draft ordinance by email so Carolyn can respond.
Separately, staff announced the city's Tree City USA recognition and a growth award (the commission asked staff to confirm whether it was the seventh or eighth growth award). Commissioners discussed using mitigation funds for downtown sidewalk planting sites that allow root space (structural soil / permeable pavement) and noted sidewalk tree-pit systems used in nearby communities as models.
Ending: Staff will circulate the planting logistics and the meeting recording to members (so absent commissioner Sue can review); TreeWhip materials and volunteers will be coordinated ahead of Arbor Day events.
