The City of Aberdeen on April 7 approved joining a community memorandum of understanding connected to a statewide early learner initiative intended to support children from birth to age 8 and the organizations that serve them.
A presenter for the local group said the effort used the Early Learner Community Action Tool (LCAT) to score local practices and found the community is "partially or fully" performing about 42% of the practices the tool evaluates. The presenter described two priority projects: creating a local resource guide and building relationships with parent organizations to solicit feedback.
The presenter said the group held an early learner celebration in February at Pacific Arena that drew more than 200 attendees, included local resource tables and offered free food and children's activities. "The people who attended absolutely loved it," the presenter said.
Local partners that had already signed the MOU included United Way, Aberdeen Development Corporation, the public school district and Northern (listed in the presentation). The presenter said city participation was requested to show broad community support and to have a city representative among signatories.
Councilman Langer moved to approve the MOU and Council member Ronain seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote. No council member recorded a formal opposition.
The council’s action authorizes the city to sign the MOU; no funding commitment for the city was reported during the presentation.
