Mayor announces $325,000 ODNR grant for West Rec inclusive playground and $130,000 for compost facility

Mayor Brubaker told the council on April 7 that Elyria received two grants the city expects to use for park and solid-waste projects.
"We got the information in regards to the 2 big grants we got last week: dollars 325,000 from ODNR for the West Rec All inclusive park playground, as well as the $130,000 from the Ohio recycle grama to help us fund the compost facility," the mayor said.
Brubaker credited Assistant Safety Service Director Stroszak for facilitating the compost facility grant and Director Reardon for work on the ODNR application. He said the compost funding will ease some sanitation-department financial pressure and that the $325,000 ODNR award will fund the West Rec all-inclusive playground.
The mayor said those grants will allow the city to reallocate funds from the 2016 parks levy program to finish funding a pocket park on 15th Street and West Avenue after earlier bids came in about 20% above estimates. "So again, kudos to Mr. Stroszak for the compost facility and Director Reardon for thinking ahead on the ODNR grant at West Rec," Brubaker said.
No council action was required during the meeting; the mayor opened the floor for questions and reported both grants were secured the prior week.
