Norwood official asks county for support to house police boat at Lake Tillery site

During public comment, Norwood Commissioner Robbie Coe and Chief John Wilson asked the board to provide a letter supporting the town’s request to house a police boat at an existing structure on the Norwood side of Lake Tillery.
Coe told the board he has discussed the plan with Duke Energy regional staff and that the structure and lease with Duke Energy appear not to prohibit storing a police boat; he said a FERC permit originally obtained by the county and the water department may need review and that, if a permit is required, responsibility for obtaining it would fall to the Town of Norwood. Coe, who said he has written four FERC permits and has 30 years’ experience on Lake Tillery, asked the board for a support letter.
Chief Wilson said housing the boat at the site would reduce response time dramatically — from about 30 minutes with the boat currently stored at another facility to roughly five minutes — and would improve emergency response for boating incidents, drownings and heavy summer traffic on the lake. The chief also said wildlife officers welcome the additional access.
No county action was taken at the meeting. Commissioners and staff did not commit to issuing a letter during the public-comment period; Norwood representatives said they would remain after the meeting for questions and next steps.
