County approves additional Justice Center roof work; insurance to cover part of repairs

Blue Earth County commissioners on April 8 approved additional roofing work at the Justice Center so the entire building (excluding garage space) will be reroofed following February wind damage.
Tim Edwards, facilities, told the board that insurance will cover a portion of the damage from the February wind event and that most of the insurance‑covered work is already being processed. Edwards said staff had budgeted for roofing work in the 2026 budget but sought board approval to move forward sooner because contractors were mobilized and offered favorable pricing.
During the discussion Edwards said insurance would cover “a little over $1,100,000” for portions of the roof repair. Commissioners asked whether the additional county cost being requested was outside that insurance payment; staff confirmed the county would fund the remainder. A motion to approve the county share for the additional Justice Center roofing work was made, seconded and carried.
Why it matters: Completing the reroofing should reduce future weather‑related risk for the facility and align work while contractors are available. The board noted warranties on previous roofing and timing of replacement (Edwards said prior warranty periods and roof age are factors in the decision).
What’s next: Staff will finalize the contract with the selected roofing firm and begin work as soon as the contract is signed and scheduling allows.
