The Brownsville Heritage Preservation Commission approved staff recommendations for exterior work at 34 East Levy Street, a property historically identified in staff materials as the Great Western / Renfro & Renfro office building. The owner, present at the hearing, told the commission he plans to use the building for his office and to coordinate a compatible façade treatment across adjacent properties he owns.
Staff described the building’s mid-20th-century appearance and noted that some original terrazzo and interior stair features will be preserved. Velez presented seven staff recommendations for approval, including requesting building and COA permits, preserving terrazzo and internal stair, using light-colored aluminum storefront framing, requiring clear (non-tinted) glass, and addressing landscaping constraints because much of the site is parking.
The owner (Garcia) said he will preserve the right-side building with original brick and stone features and will use a matching facade concept for other buildings along Levy Street to create a cohesive block. Garcia also said he intends to relocate his office to this building from the Southmost Savings and Loan building and that he has a restaurant prospect for a nearby relocated house site.
Staff confirmed the property can proceed with permit filings under the agreed conditions. The commission voted to approve the staff recommendations by voice vote.
The commission closed the public hearing, approved the item, and adjourned the meeting. Staff and the owner will complete required permit applications and follow the seven agreed items before construction.
