Police report says downtown car‑washer solicitation has fallen after joint enforcement effort

City staff told the City Commission on March 4 that coordinated enforcement has reduced solicitation by informal car washers in downtown Brownsville.
Lieutenant Sergio Perez of the police department's Special Investigations Unit updated the commission on enforcement actions. Perez said bike patrol officers, public works stormwater crews and code enforcement met on Feb. 6 to coordinate an approach. During February, the joint team contacted approximately 30 individuals washing cars in downtown and warned or informed most, with two people receiving citations after prior warnings.
Perez said officers noted some car washers used an exterior water faucet on a city building and a fire hydrant at Tenth and Saint Charles for water and that internal services addressed the unauthorized use of those water sources. He told commissioners the downtown solicitation level has been significantly reduced and that the departments will continue monitoring the area.
