Public commentator warns of potential local impacts if Starbase Texas incorporates; raises concerns about leadership

During the public-comment portion of the Brownsville City Commission meeting, resident Yolanda Spies urged elected leaders to prioritize accountability and fairness amid large development proposals and specifically raised concerns about the potential incorporation of Starbase Texas.

Spies said incorporation could shift property and sales tax revenues away from the City of Brownsville and Cameron County to a newly created municipality. "When large corporations or influential figures seek to reshape Brownsville, we must ask, who is really benefiting? And more importantly, who is being left behind?" she said, warning that services such as police, fire and infrastructure could be affected if tax streams move elsewhere.

Spies also criticized Elon Musk, referencing recent public behavior and saying, "Those with hateful ideologies seem to believe he is on their side," and urged the commission to consider the city’s values and relationships with organizations and leaders. She asked commissioners to carefully consider long-term consequences and to prioritize transparency and residents’ safety and livelihoods.

The remarks were part of public comment; the commission did not take action or respond in detail on the subject during the meeting.
