Brownsville reports 33 residents used warming centers during recent inclement weather

City staff told the Brownsville City Commission that four warming centers were prepared during a recent inclement-weather event and that 33 individuals used those shelters between Jan. 20 and Jan. 21.
A city staff presenter described emergency-management coordination beginning Jan. 16 with repeated meetings through Jan. 21 and daily contact with the National Weather Service to track the event. The city kept offices open during regular business hours and identified four facilities as potential warming centers: Good Neighbor Settlement House (activated Jan. 20–22), Brownsville Sports Park and West Iglesia Bautista (both activated on Jan. 21) and Gonzales Park (which was not activated). The presenter said 33 people used the warming shelters during Jan. 20–21.
Commissioners and staff thanked departmental partners and external organizations for their assistance in opening and staffing the centers. The presenter said Gonzales Park remained on standby and was not opened because the team monitored demand and activation needs.
The commission did not take formal action on the briefing; the report was given as part of the city manager’s updates.
