APAC delivers annual concurrence letter, asks district for fuller staffing and cultural training

Representatives of the Rochester Public Schools American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (APAC) presented their annual concurrence letter to the school board Feb. 18, reaffirming priorities for native student supports and asking the district to expand staffing, training and family partnership work.
APAC member Guthrie Capicella read the committee’s letter, which thanked the district for progress and requested several actions: that human resources continue attending Native hiring events and that the district convert the current part‑time liaison position to a full‑time liaison; that the district provide approved professional development on Indigenous ways of learning and being and fund staff attendance at Native education conferences; that the district establish an elders and residents program and conduct regular meetings between APAC and the board; and that transitional plans be created for native students entering sixth and ninth grade.
Board members responded positively and pledged administrative follow‑up. Superintendent Kent Pickell said administrative support would be assigned to facilitate regular meetings and follow up on APAC’s recommendations. The board will prepare a formal response over the next two meetings and work with APAC on scheduling ongoing dialogue and possible school visits.
