District tech directors brief board on network redundancy, cloud migration and high costs of full power redundancy

Technology leaders for Indian Prairie CUSD 204 presented a spring update to the Board of Education on April 7 outlining the district's network topology, cloud migration progress, failure points, and the cost trade-offs of full redundancy for power and Internet.
Rodney Mack, William Gray and Brian Grinstead described a two-data-center design and a network split that routes roughly half the district's buildings over one Internet pipe and half over another. They said about 80'90% of district systems have moved to cloud services, increasing reliance on Internet connectivity while reducing dependence on on-site servers.
Why it matters: With student information systems, email, classroom tools and other key services cloud-hosted, outages of Internet service or power at a building can interrupt classroom activities. Presenters said the district's current design provides automatic failover between two Internet "pipes" and data replication between the data centers, and that those features make most short outages seamless to users.
Costs and feasibility: District staff outlined what a fully redundant power and connectivity program would require: UPS units in all MDF/IDF closets and backup generators for every building, plus separate physical routes for diverse fiber paths. They gave high-level cost estimates: UPS deployment approaching $1 million, generators and site work in the multi-million-dollar range, and ongoing maintenance costs of roughly six figures per year. Presenters said those sums would be hard to justify for outages that are infrequent and often short.
Operational details: The presenters said some services will remain on-site for technical reasons (transportation server, security cameras, door access controls, intercoms and certain file shares). Security camera footage was singled out as unlikely to move to the cloud because of data-volume and retention needs. Presenters said hot-spot devices and mobile phone apps for district phone and communications ("204 Connect") offer interim continuity for principals and administrators during short outages.
Board questions and clarifications: Board members asked whether phones work when building power fails; presenters said phones require building power for desk devices but that staff with the district phone app on a cell phone or laptop can receive calls if the district provides hot spots. Board members also pressed on whether cameras and access controls would be affected; presenters said those systems would go offline during power loss unless a building's critical closets were put on generator-backed power.
Next steps: Technology staff said they will continue cloud migrations for file storage and the transportation server, coordinate generator work with facilities to avoid duplicate spending, and run retraining and drills for mobile communications and outage plans.
Ending: Presenters characterized the district as in a strong operational position but recommended focused investments and rehearsed procedures rather than a district-wide, high-cost redundancy program.
