During the emergency management report, the county’s Emergency Management Director (staff) said the Homeland Security portion of the annual grant covers extrication gear, personal protective equipment (PPE) and a backup communications system. The director told commissioners the generator component of the purchase is approximately $33,000; the commission approved an amended authorization "for up to $42,578.52," which the motion specified as flow-through money to be used for the equipment outlined.
A commissioner clarified that the PPE purchases would be distributed to EMS. Staff confirmed the grant will also fund a backup communications generator that can run for extended periods on reserve fuel to support response if primary systems fail.
The Emergency Management Director also reported ongoing damage assessments following recent storms. The county is compiling figures for individual assistance and public-assistance damage categories and said local government damage must meet a local threshold (discussed in the meeting as approximately $927,000) to advance certain state-level requests; the director said the state is coordinating regional totals and that Sumner County is completing assessments that may feed into a larger declaration for neighboring counties.
