Supervisors approve MOU with Crater Youth Care Commission to secure closer juvenile detention beds

The Greensville County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Crater Youth Care Commission to obtain juvenile detention placement capacity closer to the county. County staff and Sheriff Jarrett described an increase in violent juvenile incidents and repeated difficulty finding nearby beds; the sheriff said the county has at times had to transport juveniles as far as Bristol, Tennessee, a multi‑hour trip.
Under the MOU, the commission anticipates typically having space available for up to two Greensville County juveniles and may have additional space when available. The MOU does not guarantee beds; county staff said this is a first‑step membership and that the commission will revisit the relationship after one year if the county requests guaranteed beds.
The motion to approve the MOU was made, seconded and passed by roll call. County officials said closer detention space would reduce deputy time spent transporting youth and help with court appearance logistics.
