Orinda City staff and an ad hoc council subcommittee presented a plan on April 7 to mark the city’s 40th anniversary on July 1, 2025. The subcommittee and staff proposed a yearlong program of community events and limited branding, and estimated the direct cost of the city’s activities would not exceed $10,000.
Subcommittee members described planned elements including downtown light-post banners, a city booth at the OA’s parade and festival in the park, an ice-cream social to honor incorporation founders, a possible trolley or vintage-car presence in the parade, and outreach with the Orinda Historical Society to record oral histories of city founders. Staff has begun logo and banner design work and has priced tent rentals and banner options; a 20-by-40-foot event tent for parade-area shade was quoted at roughly $1,200 for the day.
Councilmembers supported including anniversary items in the 2025–26 budget where appropriate and asked staff to coordinate with the Orinda Association and the Chamber of Commerce on event logistics and business involvement. The subcommittee will continue planning and coordinate a limited set of expenditures this fiscal year; larger items will be budget requests for next year.
Why it matters: A 40th-anniversary program aims to celebrate civic history, recognize civic founders, and promote civic engagement. The city plans modest, yearlong activities that emphasize existing community events and partnerships rather than a single large expenditure.
Next steps: Staff will finalize logo designs and logistics, coordinate with community partners (Orinda Association, Orinda Historical Society, the Chamber of Commerce), and include fiscal-year 2025–26 budget requests for items that require funding beyond the fiscal-year close.
