Scituate honors Gates Middle School Principal Ryan Beatty after statewide leadership award

The Scituate School Committee opened its April 7 special meeting by recognizing Gates Middle School Principal Ryan Beatty after he was named a 2025 Principal of the Year by the Massachusetts School Administrators Association.

Superintendent Birkhead said the award “is a testament to Principal Beatty’s unwavering commitment to the students, staff, and entire Gates community,” praising his leadership and the school’s culture. The committee, district staff and families filled the meeting room to honor Beatty and hear remarks from students, administrators and a state lawmaker.

The committee and district leaders framed the award as a reflection of Gates’ collective work. Assistant Principal Jill Smith told the committee she has “seen what all the buzz was about” while working with Beatty and credited his daily effort to build a positive school culture. Student speakers described Beatty’s visible presence at the school’s morning drop-off and said he has helped create a welcoming environment.

State Representative Patrick Kearney presented a citation on behalf of the Legislature and read official congratulations into the record, saying Beatty’s leadership “preps students to be civically engaged” and that the recognition reflects the town’s showing of support.

Beatty told the audience the award belongs to the larger school community and thanked staff, students, families and colleagues for their support. He emphasized that school leadership is a collaborative effort and said he looks forward to continuing work with the district. No formal committee action was required for the recognition.

The ceremony preceded the committee’s regular business, which included a number of votes and presentations later in the meeting.
