School facilities staff told the Londonderry School Board on May 3 that a March wind storm caused substantial damage to the Londonderry High School gym roof and that temporary repairs have been completed while the district pursues a full replacement.
"It will need a complete replacement before next winter," the facilities presenter said, describing the roof as over 20 years old and noting the district completed a temporary fix to the coating to keep the building weather-tight.
Why it matters: The district said its insurer covered the temporary repairs minus a $1,000 deductible but has not yet committed to funding a full replacement because of the roof’s age. The district posted an RFP for replacement work; staff said the insurer will send an inspector and that the district’s decision will depend on the inspector’s findings and contractor bids.
Board members asked staff to document outreach to potential bidders, to require material/labor line-item breakouts so the district can compare quotes, and to keep the board apprised of the insurer’s determination. Facilities staff also reported summer projects that include door replacements; two safety-related door installations were estimated at roughly $8,000 and $5,500 respectively and staff requested permission to proceed with a long-standing vendor if additional bids do not materialize in time.
Ending: Staff said they will have a clearer plan for roof replacement and associated costs by the next meeting after insurer inspection and additional contractor responses.
