Socorro ISD board honors dozens of students, musicians and athletic teams

At the April 3 special meeting the Socorro ISD Board of Trustees recognized students and teams for art, music, debate, athletics and mariachi achievements, including several All-State musicians and multiple district championship basketball teams.
The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees used part of its April 3 special meeting to honor students and teams from across the district for academic and extracurricular achievements.
Daniel Escobar, the district’s chief communications officer, introduced a series of recognitions that included winners of the district’s Black History Month art contest, students who advanced to state-level University Interscholastic League (UIL) competitions, and 11 students named 2025 Texas Music Educators Association All-State musicians. Escobar said the All-State honor is awarded to students judged among the top 2% of musicians in Texas.
Other recognitions included a clarinet choir invited to perform at the 2025 TMEA convention, wrestlers who qualified for the UIL 6A state meet, and four district championship basketball teams. Highlights announced at the meeting:
- Americas High School girls varsity basketball: finished district play undefeated (12–0) and had an overall record announced as 28–4; assistant coaches listed were Elizabeth Bolden and Erin Espinosa. - Americas High School boys varsity basketball: finished district play undefeated; overall record announced as 21–11; head coach Mike Brooks was named. - Eastlake boys basketball: overall record announced as 24–9 and district record cited in remarks as 8–4; head coach Matthew Taylor was named.
The meeting also recognized mariachi ensembles from each SISD high school for qualifying for the 2025 UIL State Mariachi Festival. Socorro ISD noted it was the only district in the city with all high schools advancing to the state competition.
Escobar thanked students, coaches and teachers and invited honorees to the front of the room for photos; the district photographer, Mr. Largo, was noted as posting high-resolution photos to the district website. No formal board actions or votes were taken for the recognitions; they were ceremonial acknowledgments added to the meeting agenda.
