Hopkinton construction update: new building on schedule; Charleswood project trending under budget

At the April 3 Hopkinton School Committee meeting, staff gave a construction update for district projects, saying major work remains on schedule and budgets are holding.
A project representative reported two slip-and-fall incidents in February—one requiring a doctor's follow-up—and a March incident in which a mass climber collapsed and damaged a gym wall. "In terms of safety, in February we did have 2 slip and fall events, 1 of which required a doctor's follow-up. And then in March we had the mass climber collapse," the representative said at the meeting.
The presentation said the primary campus project is targeting final completion in August 2026 and that 86% of the project costs have been committed to date. The representative said roof-truss and metal-deck installation, parapet framing, CMU block installation and mechanical/electrical/plumbing rough-in work are in progress, and that the team is still working to obtain a building permit.
Change orders and budget figures: the committee was told change orders so far include a radon mitigation system ($21,000), a water-source heat pump ($21,000), plumbing clarifications ($27,000) and a hydronic pump change ($1,300), for a reported total of $71,000. The architect reported expenditures to date at about 70%, the owner's project manager (OPM) contract at 35% and the construction contract at 18%.
Charleswood update: the committee heard that the Charleswood project has received conservation commission approval for street improvements, that the Educational School Building Committee (ESBC) authorized construction drawings to go to bid, and that February estimates show the project trending $8,600,000 under budget. Bidding was described as planned for March–April, with a construction contract award targeted for May 2025 and construction anticipated to begin in June or July 2025.
Technology, furniture and security: committee members were told that BCM Controls is the district's security vendor and that E-rate funds are being pursued to purchase network components. The procurement of classroom technology is expected to be brought to the committee for approval in April 2025.
Committee members asked questions after the update; staff confirmed the schedule and noted ongoing mock-up installation and testing and completion of exterior work as near-term milestones.
