Student and staff recognitions
Janet Lewis, the division's gifted education coordinator, presented national recognition awards for Magna Vista, Bassett and other high school students who earned College Board national recognition designations. Athletic and arts recognitions followed: Bassett athletic director Mark Jones read awards for varsity players, and coaches and principals recognized girls' basketball teams and individual student honors at several schools. Vassal (Magna Vista transcript uses several local school names) students were recognized for district and regional honors and participation in FBLA, FFA, theater, band and oratorical contests. A photographic presentation and list of upcoming school events concluded the recognitions segment.
Proclamations and resolutions
Board members read and recorded several proclamations offered through statewide organizations and the governor's observances: the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Workforce Readiness Month (April 2025) and Workforce Readiness Day (April 16, 2025); recognition of April 2025 as Month of the Military Child, citing the commonwealth's military-connected student population and Purple Star designations; and April 2025 as School Library Month, noting the role of school libraries and librarians in addressing reading and information literacy needs.
Public comment and student board report
One public commenter, Mary Martin, welcomed newly seated board member Miss Edridge and offered volunteer support to the board. The student-school-board representative raised a complaint received from students about Advanced Placement (AP) and dual-enrollment (DE) instruction: students reported concerns that some teachers were not adequately preparing AP students for exams and that some students were steered toward DE courses, which students said may not transfer to out-of-state colleges. The board indicated the curriculum and instruction staff would follow up.
Other items of note
The Southside Virginia Regional Technology Consortium (SVRTC) presented staff awards recognizing technology support and leadership among division employees. The board also received information about upcoming events including a division "Grama of Distinction" awards program, school tours, and an update that a Harvest Foundation partnership and Connect Health are working with the division to explore school-based health clinics.
