Sheriff, district announce Mexican consulate outreach event co-sponsored by district and sheriff’s office

Sheriff Furlong told the Carson City School District Board during public comment on Feb. 25 that the Mexican consulate will visit Carson City for an informational session aimed at informing families about legal rights and available resources.

The session, scheduled for March 2 at St. Teresa Avila, is co-sponsored by the school district, the sheriff’s office and the Catholic parish that will host the meeting. Sheriff Furlong said the consulate is “very excited” to attend and that the session will offer an opportunity to hear community concerns and to explain resources. He and board leaders also discussed plans for follow-up meetings involving neighboring county sheriffs to address cross-jurisdictional issues.

Sheriff Furlong thanked the district and board president for partnering on the initiative; board members noted the event has been announced at recent Masses at the hosting parish and encouraged attendance. Board members and staff emphasized the event’s limited capacity because the parish venue is restricted to the congregation, and they described the meeting as a first step toward improving community relationships and countering misinformation.

Superintendent (present in the meeting record) and President Lupe Ramirez both thanked Sheriff Furlong and said district staff had worked to assemble connections and resources.

Board members said they valued the outreach and encouraged broader community participation in future events if larger venues can be secured.
