Carson City trustees adopt ICT security policy 10-65 after second reading

Carson City School District trustees voted Feb. 25 to adopt Policy 10-65, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Security, after a second-reading presentation from district staff.

The policy was approved on a motion by Trustee Richard Varner and seconded by Trustee Walker; the presiding officer announced “motion carries” after asking for public comment and receiving none.

District technology staff presented three clarifying edits during the second reading. The board was told the paragraph that had read as a disclaimer about causes of data loss (for example, human error) was moved to the policy’s introduction for clarity. The title “director of information technology” was corrected to “director of Innovation and Technology,” a conjunction placement was adjusted to separate duties more clearly, and the phrase “confidentiality, integrity and availability” was amended to explicitly refer to “data.”

Mister Maderos, the staff presenter, described the policy as “foundational” for subsequent internal standards, procedures and practices that will formalize the district’s cybersecurity, sensitive-data handling and student-data privacy work.

No public speakers commented on the measure before the board voted to adopt it.

The policy is intended to establish district-level expectations and to support later operational documents that will spell out technical controls, incident response steps and staff roles.

Trustees and staff said the measure is the starting point for additional work by the Technology Office to implement and maintain security measures across district systems.
