They attend all of the events, and they're looking to engage with anyone who attends those events,” Speaker 2, a Sandy City service ambassador, said.
Speaker 6, a Sandy City service ambassador, added, “Being an ambassador, I can represent all the good things about Sandy, and it's a way for me to give back to the community,” and listed specific local attractions and recurring events that ambassadors promote. Ambassadors said they also notify residents about public-safety topics such as flooding, fire danger, neighborhood watch programs and emergency-preparedness meetings.
“All of the ambassadors meet every month with the mayor. It is her time with us to answer our questions, to tell her what's happening in the city,” Speaker 7, a Sandy City service ambassador, said. Ambassadors said those monthly meetings give them up-to-date information to share when residents ask about city services, events or safety notices.
Speakers described the volunteer role as a way to introduce neighbors to city programs and to encourage civic participation, including attendance at city council meetings. At the meeting, ambassadors also said they had been surprised and gratified by a recent honor that they expect will increase public awareness of the program. “It was very much a surprise when we were told that we were being honored,” Speaker 8, a Sandy City service ambassador, said.
