Town hires track coach; registration opens and wait list reduced

The Town of Southborough Recreation Department told the Recreation Commission on April 1 it has hired a track coach and restarted the town's youth track program. Department staff reported the new coach is a Merrimack student and local graduate who took the post during a final recruitment round.
"He's a very great young man. He's actually currently going to Merrimack, wrapping up his senior year ... he stepped up, and we are very lucky to have him," said Recreation Department staff during the meeting. The staff member said the coach initially accepted a 25-participant roster; the department recruited volunteers and staff and added 10 more participants from a wait list, bringing enrollment to 35 with about 10 remaining on a wait list.
The commission discussed coordinating with Southborough Middle School staff to align the program with interscholastic offerings and noted track functions as a feeder to high school athletics. Commissioners praised staff for filling a position that nearly forced cancellation and for the department's outreach to partner organizationssuch as a local futsal club and other program providers.
No formal action or funding vote was taken at the April 1 meeting. Staff said additional program registrations (RAV 5) will open next week and that spring and April vacation offerings include field trips and single-day options designed to extend recreational opportunities for families.
