Council signals intent to remove remaining Goodbread/Dixie Moon structure; staff to place item on next agenda

Bonita Springs City Council discussed the deteriorated Goodbread/Dixie Moon structure in downtown and directed staff to notify the Historic Preservation Board and place a formal agenda item at a future meeting to consider removal or demolition. Several council members said the remnant structure no longer retains historic integrity and that further maintenance funds are not the best use of limited resources.

Council member Fitzpatrick said the building had lost its historic value after relocation and subsequent changes and recommended removing the remnant. Other councilors and staff asked that the Historic Preservation Board be informed and given the opportunity to convene and consider the property before the council takes final action; council also directed staff to advertise the item so the public can weigh in.

Next steps: Staff will coordinate with the Historic Preservation Board on meeting timing and will place an item on a future council agenda that outlines the options (repair, adaptive reuse, demolition), applicable historic-preservation procedures and estimated costs. Because the property is on the city's local register, the Historic Preservation Board's review and any appeals process could apply; staff advised the council on the procedural path.
