Council approves removal of small vacant parcel from Tampa Heights local historic district

City Council voted to remove a small vacant parcel at 206 West Columbus Drive from the Tampa Heights local historic district after staff and the Historic Preservation Commission recommended approval.
Elaine Lund of Historic Preservation told council the parcel resulted from a 2022 lot reconfiguration and that the specific strip “does not meet any of the criteria for local historic designation as it is vacant.” Lund said future development on the parcel could not be treated as historic and that removal would not negatively affect the surrounding district.
Attorney Steve Miccolini, representing the petitioners, said the parcel is roughly 32 feet by 125 feet and noted the Historic Preservation Commission and planning staff had recommended approval. Miccolini confirmed the applicant submitted letters of support from adjacent property owners.
Council voted in favor of an ordinance for first reading to remove the property from the district, with second reading and adoption scheduled for May 1, 2025. Staff said the removal was technical and that the adjacent historic property would be protected by planned wall reconstruction and other measures already required in the prior review.
