Commission declares county equipment surplus and plans donation of older patrol vehicles to Southern West Virginia

Berkeley County commissioners declared a lengthy list of office equipment and vehicles surplus and authorized disposal through the online auction service GovDeals. The commission also approved detailing three older Taurus patrol vehicles for donation or transfer to counties or municipalities in Southern West Virginia.
Gary Juan, county administrator, said much of the surplus was furniture and equipment left in the former county clerk's office and that several vehicles are nonfunctional. "You have a laundry list of equipment that lays around," Juan told the commission. He recommended salvaging reusable items and placing the remainder on GovDeals.
Commissioners discussed an option raised by a commissioner to transfer three functional but aged patrol vehicles to counties in southern West Virginia experiencing budget strain; a commissioner noted McDowell County had been reported as near bankruptcy. The commission added language to the motion to prepare and detail those three vehicles for transfer to a Southern West Virginia county or municipality to be determined.
The motion to declare the equipment surplus and prepare the three vehicles for transfer was moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote. The county will photograph items, list them on GovDeals, and move forward with the vehicle-detailing process pending identification of recipient jurisdictions.
