Scott County ambulance likely totaled after collision; court to consider emergency replacement via Sourcewell contract

Scott County officials said an ambulance returning from Lexington was struck at the intersection of Broadway and Oliver Lewis and is likely to be totaled. County staff asked the fiscal court to consider an expedited procurement to replace the vehicle and preserve operational capacity.
Chris, a county staff member, told the court the police report indicates the other driver ran a red light and was at fault. Staff said the damage to the ambulance box warped the floor and the county expects an adjuster to confirm the vehicle is a total loss.
Penn Care, the vendor the county uses for ambulances, has a 2022 model on the lot and offered delivery in June. County staff quoted a price of $360,000 for that available unit and said Penn Care would provide a loaner ambulance at no charge until delivery if the county agrees to purchase the vehicle. "They say we could take delivery of that in June of this year," Chris said.
Scott County operates a fleet of 10 ambulances, officials said. Four are out of service for mechanical or electrical issues, leaving limited backup capacity during a period of high demand and severe weather. County staff asked the court to consider a special called meeting so the court can vote on a Sourcewell purchase order; Sourcewell is a cooperative purchasing contract the county cited as removing the need for a separate competitive bid.
The court scheduled a special call for 4 p.m. Monday to consider the purchase and asked staff to provide a short spreadsheet of fleet age and mileage and written specifications and cost details for the available unit. Staff will also ask the vendor if the county may bridge payment until after July 1 to align with budget timing and potential insurance reimbursement.
