Jackson Preston Memorial Fishing Derby to use reservoir May 3; fish delivery set for May 2

The Parks and Recreation Committee received details April 2 about the upcoming Jackson Preston Memorial Fishing Derby, which organizers said will stage the fishing portion of the event at the Sunbury reservoir on Saturday, May 3.

Committee members were told the larger event will include food and activities at the old Sunbury Christian property while the fishing competition itself will take place at the reservoir. “The fishing portion of the event is gonna take place at the reservoir. But they're going to have, like, food and other things, and all of that is gonna be at the old Sunbury Christian,” a committee member summarized.

Organizers and staff confirmed a fish delivery to stock the reservoir is scheduled for May 2, the day before the event. Committee members noted the city has hosted similar fishing derbies in the past and that the arrangements did not raise immediate concerns at the Parks and Rec meeting.

No formal committee action was recorded on the derby; staff said the item had been reviewed by the events committee and a representative had already participated in that meeting.
