Building department: demolition at 109 Front Street, permit reminders and property-maintenance enforcement

Mineola’s building department updated the board and public on construction activity, permit requirements and property-maintenance enforcement at the April 2 meeting.
Building official (Mr. O'Keefe) reported that the owner of 109 Front Street — a one-story parking structure between Third Avenue and Front Street — has installed construction fencing and begun demolition preparations; a demolition permit has been issued and portions of the sidewalk will be closed for safety. Mr. O'Keefe asked residents with questions to contact the building department for details and monitoring arrangements.
O'Keefe reminded homeowners and businesses that new HVAC installations (central air or mini-split units) require building and electrical permits and encouraged applicants to contact the building department for applications. He also urged all residents to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, noting that "These detectors only have a 10 year lifespan." (Mr. O'Keefe asked residents to verify detectors and replace units older than 10 years.)
The village reiterated property-maintenance enforcement priorities for the season: commercial properties that allow excessive weed growth or debris will first receive reminders and then notices of violation or summonses if compliance is not achieved. Officials said sanitation crews will continue to clear loose debris from main commercial arteries, weather permitting.
Board members noted isolated complaints about temporary storage of construction equipment on the Western Beef property and said that staff understand the placement to be temporary while other drilling/paving work concludes. Officials said Code Enforcement and the building department are monitoring the issue and expected the equipment to be removed soon.
Residents were notified that project and permit details are public and that copies of the proposed budget and other records are available at Village Hall or via the GoGov app.
