Summer feeding program Michigan City Area Schools requested use of three park sites — Joe Hawkins Park, Tall Timbers Park and Walker Street Park — to run the free summer feeding program for children 18 and younger Monday through Friday from June 4 through July 25, 2025. The school system submitted an insurance certificate in proper order. Park staff supplied 2024 participation numbers for context: Joe Hawkins served 932 meals, Tall Timbers served 878 and Walker Street Park served 2,404 meals during the 2024 season. The board approved the request by voice vote.
Brew at the Zoo The board approved a major-event license agreement for Brew at the Zoo, hosted by the Michigan City Zoological Society, to be held June 7, 2025. Park staff said the event has run for roughly nine to ten years and is a fundraiser; recent single‑night net proceeds have been in the roughly $20,000 range, and tickets are $50. The Zoological Society provides funding back to the zoo — up to $25,000 a year for veterinary care and food under the parties’ MOU — and also funds other zoo projects. The board approved the license agreement by voice vote.
Live at the Lakefront Under an existing memorandum of understanding for Millennium Plaza, Barber Country Adventures presents a Live at the Lakefront concert series. Because the MOU covers fees for Millennium Plaza use, the major-event license for the 2025 Live at the Lakefront season carries no additional fee; the board approved the standard license agreement by voice vote.
Claims, payroll and donations The board approved the claims docket for April 2, 2025, totaling $53,142.79, and payroll for pay period March 2–15 (pay date March 21), totaling $69,711.75. Gifts and donations accepted included a $400 sponsorship from De Vries Tire Company for the YBL team and an $18 miscellaneous donation to the zoo. Each motion was approved by voice vote.
Several items before the board were procedural approvals consistent with prior board policy and memoranda of understanding; none of these motions authorized long‑term contracts beyond the standard license or grant arrangements described on the record.
