Charlestown Planning Commission planners and consultants on Jan. 15 presented a final report tying expanded housing density to elevated nitrate risk in the town’s coastal Salt Pond watershed and offered zoning and infrastructure tools to manage that risk while accommodating additional housing units.

Consultant Jim Reardon of Weston & Sampson summarized environmental data showing “we have a lot of dwellings that are packed in pretty close to the salt ponds,” and warned denser development raises nitrate loading that threatens both pond ecology and private drinking wells.
