The Burrillville Town Council on Feb. 12 appropriated up to $3,000 from the restricted contingency fund to cover an initial purchase of commemorative challenge coins for events tied to the town's 250th-related activities.
Christopher Todi, speaking for the Burrillville 250 Commission, asked the council to cover the initial production cost and said the commission would reimburse the town from coin sales. "We're asking that you would fund this cost, the initial cost for the coins, and then the town will be reimbursed from the proceeds when we sell the coins," Todi said. He said the commission planned to sell coins at town events and online and expected to price the coin at about $20.
Council members discussed production quantities and pricing. Staff and councilors recommended ordering a minimum of 300 coins to lower per-unit cost; Todi said 300 was within the commission's expectation and would improve margins. A motion to appropriate not more than $3,000 to the Burrillville 250 Commission, with funds to come from the restricted contingency fund and to be returned from sales proceeds, passed by voice vote.
Council President Michael C. Wood (speaking as town manager earlier in the meeting) said the council will establish a revolving account at a future meeting so proceeds can be managed without repeated appropriations. The commission outlined additional plans including a May 2026 focus event and future fundraising through commemorative bricks and other merchandise.
