Councilors review state legislative proposals; early-voting change under watch

One councilor said she plans to seek the council’s support for a bill that, if enacted as described, would reduce early voting from 20 days to 10 days and permit early voting on the weekend before an election. The councilor said that change would reduce the town’s early-voting cost roughly in half, from just under $10,000 to about $5,000, while offering weekend early-voting options. The speaker cautioned that the draft bill language was confusing and that she had double-checked the sponsor’s intent before planning to bring the matter back to the council for a possible letter of support.
Councilors also discussed housing-related bills and proposals that could affect municipal tax exemptions and revenue sharing; they asked staff to continue monitoring developments the League of Cities and Towns circulates and to forward municipal updates to the full council.
