Residents urge forensic audit and raise conduct concerns during Lake City public comments

Several Lake City residents used the council's Jan. 14 public comment period to press for transparency about city finances and to complain about inconsistent enforcement of the two-minute speaking limit.

A frequent commenter identified as Miss Maddie Thomas said she wanted fair treatment at meetings and alleged a weapon had been allowed in the council chamber at a previous meeting. Thomas told the council, “As a taxpayer, I am asking for an audit, a forensic audit so we will know,” and asked for written responses by the next meeting if officials could not answer during the session.

Other speakers pressed the council for clearer information about the 2025 budget, questioned whether the city had sufficient funds for the year and said recent staff changes had generated rumors the public wanted addressed. One speaker who identified sewer and water problems in a neighborhood asked the council to prioritize system repairs and said residents were seeing brown or discolored water.

Mayor Yumeka Robinson repeatedly reminded commenters of the public comment rules, asked attendees to remain respectful and told residents the council would refer topics that needed further investigation to city administration. The mayor said staff had alerted her to unresolved issues and that departments, including finance and legal, were working on them.

Council members and staff did not commit to a forensic audit on the record during the public comment period; the mayor asked for written responses if answers were not available at the meeting.

No formal council action to order a forensic audit was recorded in open session at the meeting.
