Youth-led HEARTH project presents environmental plan to Lake City council

A youth-led nonprofit told the Lake City Council on Jan. 14 that it intends to run environmental outreach and community cleanup programs in and around Lake City.
Chandler Brandon, introduced by the mayor as the HEARTH project's founder and director, described the group as “the first youth led nonprofit in Lake City” and said the project’s work will link environmental stewardship with community and economic concerns. Brandon said the project will prioritize inclusion for “people of color, in economically disadvantaged families in rural neighborhoods” and invited volunteer and partnership support from the council and residents.
Brandon listed activities the group plans to pursue, including community cleanups, education on sustainable practices and public forums to connect environmental issues to residents’ health and livelihoods. He asked the council and city staff to publicize the opportunity for youth groups to request time on the council agenda.
Mayor Yumeka Robinson and other council members thanked the young presenters and encouraged continued engagement; the mayor said youth or youth groups can request an appearance by emailing the city clerk before the last Thursday of the month to appear on a future agenda.
No formal action or funding request for the HEARTH project was recorded during the meeting.
