Lake City swears in three council members; D'Wonica Cooper elected mayor pro tem

The council convened for a swearing-in ceremony that included Sandra Fleming Crosby, Melissa Askins and D'Wonica Cooper. Minister Judge Christopher Weatherford administered the oaths. After the ceremony, Cooper was chosen mayor pro tem in a council ballot vote that the clerk summarized as four votes for D'Wonica Cooper and two votes for Nicole Singletary.
The swearing-in portion included ceremonial remarks and brief remarks by the newly sworn members. Councilwoman Sandra Fleming Crosby said she would “to the best of my ability…continue to try to do what is best for the community of Lake City.” Melissa Askins told the council she was “lookin’ forward to serving the community.” Councilwoman D'Wonica Cooper, who spoke after being sworn in, thanked residents for their support and said she was “entrusted…to continue on the duties of a council member of District 4.”
Mayor Yumeka Robinson opened the regular meeting after the ceremony and led routine business. The mayor and clerk then conducted the mayor pro tem vote; the clerk announced the tally and Robinson introduced Mayor Pro Tem Cooper to the dais.
The ceremony and vote conclude the council's first regular meeting of 2025; no further formal actions related to the swearing-in were recorded in the public portion of the meeting.
The council will carry these appointments into its regular February meeting schedule and Mayor Pro Tem Cooper will serve the two-year mayor pro tem term specified by council practice.
