Augusta —s Transportation Committee opened a brief public hearing on LD 290, a proposal introduced by Representative Mark Bleier that would remit 15 percent of certain fines collected for motor vehicle violations to the municipality where the violation occurred.
Bleier told the committee the request comes from a constituent and would help municipalities that shoulder paperwork, storage and other costs associated with vehicles impounded or involved in violations. "Municipalities throughout our state are responsible for paperwork, seizures, holdings of seizures, and all other aspects that come along with vehicle violations," Bleier said. "This creates a costly burden on municipalities ... this 15% reimbursement would help with the financial loss for communities for the processing of individual court appearances and all other related items."
