State DOT to close one direction of Highway 16 through La Crosse area this summer; Onalaska staff warn of traffic impacts

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will close westbound lanes of State Trunk Highway 16 (the route into La Crosse) from the Highway 157 intersection to Gillette Street for construction starting in April and running through Labor Day, Onalaska staff said during the April 1 Board of Public Works meeting.
Jared Holder explained that the DOT project will keep one direction of traffic fully open while detouring the opposite flow, a strategy the DOT chose to avoid bidirectional single-lane backups. The board was warned to expect increased traffic on US 53 and State 35 and for constituents to call with concerns over summer traffic shifts.
Holder emphasized this is a DOT-managed project and the city has no control over the decision; a detour map in the meeting packet showed closure areas and alternate routes. The board said staff would distribute DOT notices to city staff, elected officials and adjacent property owners and issue a press release ahead of the closure.
