Community members ask Portland board to add Eid and Yom Kippur to school calendar

Laura Rosen, a Portland resident, told the board that adding those holidays would acknowledge religious diversity and help Muslim and Jewish students and families feel included. Maaza Mohammed described a large community Eid gathering and asked the district to recognize the holiday so children would not have to miss school to participate.
Superintendent Scallon confirmed that the proposed 2025–26 calendar includes Eid and said the calendar will be discussed in a scheduled workshop; the item already had its first read and will return for further board consideration. The board noted the calendar discussion will continue in workshop and at subsequent meetings where the public will have additional opportunities to comment.
Why it matters: Calendar decisions affect attendance, scheduling and equity for families whose religious observances fall on school days. The board will consider the calendar formally at a later date after workshop discussion and public comment.
