Council tours Municipal Auditorium renovation; staff report progress on building systems and chambers redesign

Staff pointed to new fire-suppression piping, a planned new concrete slab in the council chamber area, replacement of single-pane windows with insulated aluminum windows and an upcoming removal of one interior column to open sightlines in the new council chambers.
Planned public amenities include a conditioned public entry plaza with ticketing kiosks, new concession openings, restrooms on the Second Floor and a family restroom on the Fourth Floor. Staff described the First Floor as a hub for public-facing services — planning, engineering, building inspections and utility collections — and said some side doors will be designated for staff access while a main public entry will be used for visitors and event patrons.
Construction staff estimated drywall and ceiling work would proceed upward from the First Floor (polishing of concrete floors was reported underway), with sheetrock installation starting on the Third Floor and framing taking shape on the Fourth. Staff noted some schedule variation across work areas and said unforeseen repairs on a 100‑year‑old building were handled out of contingency funds.
Why it matters: The auditorium renovation houses the city’s primary public meeting space and several city departments; the redesign is intended to centralize public services, improve accessibility and modernize council chambers and public engagement areas.
Next steps: Staff said window installation is scheduled, drywall and interior finishes will continue in the coming weeks, and contractors plan to advance framing and finish work with the goal of coordinated completion next spring.
