Wiseburn USD board highlights math night, teacher mini-conference, SPED collaboration and a teacher residency

Board members used their reports to highlight recent and upcoming education programs, community events and collaborative partnerships aimed at supporting instruction and student services across the Wiseburn Unified School District.
Several board members praised Del Air’s math night, which they described as drawing more than 100 participants and generating strong family engagement. Ed Services staff highlighted a teacher mini‑conference on March 7 that included three sessions, one required session on competency-based grading and optional sessions such as an “AI playground” and student-talk panels run by principals.
Ed Services reported survey results from the mini‑conference: 96% of teachers said the conference would benefit their students and 83% said they learned something useful during the day. The district said teachers attended assigned competency-based grading sessions and chose other sessions tailored to their grade levels; staff described plans to continue related work through a two‑year rollout and further design-team meetings planned for May 20.
Special-education collaboration was another focus. Staff described a third SPED collaborative meeting convened under an MOU with WFA representatives, with elementary and middle-school teachers, administrators and program specialists participating. The group identified next steps and recommended moving future meetings into the fall to allow for implementation and follow-up.
The board also announced the district’s invitation to participate in the South Bay Teacher Residency program in partnership with Torrance Unified. The residency will place a special-education teacher resident at the middle school next year; Catherine Mesa was identified as the resident’s mentor, and the board materials include a stipend for that mentor which will be considered on the agenda.
Other highlights included the recent Wiseburn Sports Complex groundbreaking (discussed separately) and communications work by the district’s communications team showcasing student publications such as the second edition of “Bulldog Bark.” Board members also referenced exploration of StrengthsFinder tools for staff and students and ongoing partnership work with DaVinci Schools on pathways and career-connected learning.
