Fire district referendum comes up short in preliminary tally; late mail ballots may change result

Chief Krueger told trustees the process provided valuable community feedback and that staff and the board will meet to review next steps. He said the district will survey residents to gather additional input and will continue to refine its outreach and communications. At the time of the report the district said it missed the needed margin by 67 votes out of a total of 1,567 votes cast; the district said 657 votes were mail‑in ballots and that many of those were yes votes, but some mail ballots remained uncounted.
The chief said the district will continue to pursue station planning despite the close result, will meet with its board and administrative staff to review the process and follow up with the village where appropriate. Trustees thanked the chief and staff for their outreach efforts and the high turnout in many precincts.
