Caltrans reports storm delays and lists state, federal grant opportunities

Caltrans acting planning deputy reported storm-related delays on mountain passes and highlighted recent allocations and funding opportunities from the California Transportation Commission, CAL FIRE and the California Energy Commission.
At the April 2, 2025 Calaveras Council of Governments meeting, Caltrans acting planning deputy Krekorian Buonce reported that storm damage has delayed efforts to reopen mountain passes and provided a roundup of state and federal funding opportunities relevant to county transportation projects.
"Due to the latest storm, Caltrans is delayed in working on opening the passes but we are actively working on those, to move towards opening those," Buonce said.
Buonce summarized several funding items: a California Transportation Commission allocation of approximately $1 billion for technology upgrades, storm resiliency and safety improvements (part of March allocations); a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) call for applications of about $5 million to support wood product infrastructure, healthy forest work and workforce development (closing April 25, 2025); and a California Energy Commission opportunity under charging interoperability of roughly $4 million (closing June 4, 2025). Buonce said many projects referenced by the COG—bike lanes, sidewalks, transit facilities and safety improvements—align with those funding sources.
Buonce closed by thanking staff and inviting questions from the board; no substantive questions were raised during the report.
