Board hears investigations and licensee-count reports; licensee totals at 1,243

Board staff presented the central investigations and audit unit and licensee-count reports at the March 20 meeting.
Investigations and case status: Staff reported seven cases closed for no jurisdiction, 58 closed for no violation, and eight cases recommended closed by case managers. The complaint-investigation status report showed six cases in investigations, eight in legal review, 38 in management review, and 24 closed; staff said these figures cover 2024 and 2025 to date for a total of 76 cases.
Licensee counts: Staff said the board has 233 collection agency licensees, 234 collection agency branches, 306 out-of-state collection agencies, and 470 out-of-state collection agency branches, totaling 1,243 licensees/branches. Staff noted a slight decline over the past five years but said 2025 figures show a small uptick compared with 2024 and that the program is not presently of concern. The board agreed to move licensing counts to an annual verbal report during the first meeting of each year, though the detailed data will continue to be provided in meeting packets and remain available to the public on request.
Staff invited questions and said investigation supervisor Grace Hamilton was on the call for follow-up if needed. The board recorded no formal action on these reports during the meeting.
