Loxahatchee Groves committee approves rural road improvement standards, focuses next on trail connections and equestrian safety

The Trails & Roads Advisory Committee of the Town of Loxahatchee Groves voted unanimously to accept the draft rural road improvement standards for submission to the Town Council, and spent the meeting discussing a townwide trails map, equestrian crossings and related maintenance and funding questions.

Committee members said the road standards are intended as a forward-looking, town-level alternative to Florida Department of Transportation requirements so the town can consistently defend its own rural character when evaluated against a written standard. "The intent is to create 3 separate documents, that will eventually be incorporated into 1," said Richard Gallant, a town staff member who presented the draft. He described separate documents for roads, drainage and multiuse/equestrian trails and said the roads document applies only to future projects and reconstructions, not all existing pavement.

Why it matters: Committee members and residents pressed for details about how the standards would affect trees, equestrian access and townspeople’s property lines.
