Commission notes concern about invasive brush disposal at transfer station, will ask ComDev for guidance

At the March 24 meeting, commissioners discussed a written concern from absent member Caris about how the town transfer station handles invasive brush brought in plastic bags.
Caris reported that a resident was told to remove invasive brush from plastic bags and place it into the outdoor brush pile. Caris said, and commissioners agreed, that state or town rules generally permit brush to be accepted only if it will be destroyed or rendered nonviable; in the reported case the brush had not been made nonviable and the procedure appeared inconsistent with protocols.
Commissioners said they did not have full background on the transfer station’s current procedures and recommended raising the matter with Community Development (ComDev) so the issue can be addressed through official channels rather than informal staff direction at the transfer station. One commissioner noted the leaf/brush area is used for composting but said details of brush handling and whether burning is permitted require confirmation.
The commission agreed to ask ComDev for direction and to include Caris’ email excerpt in that request. No changes to transfer-station practice were ordered by the commission at the meeting.
