Newfields School Board elects chair and vice chair, approves policies and forms safety advisory committee

The Newfields School Board elected Bobby as board chair and Jane Walsh as vice chair, reviewed the district’s March financial update including a $30,000 encumbrance for an odor remediation purchase order, adopted several model policies, and voted to form a school safety advisory committee made up of eight community members with Jane Walsh as the board representative.

Board reorganization was the first substantive action of the evening. After a brief discussion of past practice and interest among members, a motion to nominate Bobby for chair was seconded and approved; the board then nominated and approved Jane Walsh as vice chair. The board opened public input following the reorganization.

Why it matters: the leadership slate will set meeting and committee priorities for the coming year; the safety advisory committee is the primary vehicle the board chose to collect community input and develop options for a large, previously discussed parking-lot and safety project that has drawn public attention.
