Staff recommends Marion Charter renewal; board to consider consent-item vote April 22

Marion County Public Schools staff told the school board April 3 that Marion Charter School submitted a timely renewal application and that the district's evaluation determined the application met criteria for renewal under state law.

The renewal process matters because a renewed charter continues a school's authority to operate and can allow multi-year contract terms that support facilities investment. Mr. Ayers, presenting the renewal timeline and evaluation process, said the district evaluates academic performance, financial stability and compliance with law using the Florida Department of Education's renewal instrument and MCPS templates.

Staff reported Marion Charter met the renewal submission deadline and that the application materials and evaluation instrument had been uploaded to BoardDocs. Mr. Ayers said the formal board vote on renewal is scheduled for April 22. He also said Marion Charter indicated to staff it intends to seek a 15-year contract to support building permanent facilities on its land; the district noted state contract templates apply and that any change to the standard state contract would be limited to the contract term length.

Board members at the work session signaled support for renewing the charter and noted its role as a local choice option that helps relieve capacity pressure in parts of the county. The item will appear on the April 22 consent agenda for board action, after which staff will enter contract negotiations and return final contract language for board approval.
