Parks maintenance manager highlights accessible playgrounds, ADA restroom hardware installations

Steve Glimp, the city’s parks and grounds maintenance manager, told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission that roughly 30% of city parks now include adaptive playground features and that staff will post a parks feature list to the city website.
“We're at about 30% with our parks, but ultimately I think we'd like to have some features at every park,” Glimp said as he reviewed recent work including new playground shade at Charleston Neighborhood Preservation Park, a re-sealed and striped lot at All American Park, and ADA-compliant restroom door hardware installed at Mike Morgan, Hadlin and Levitt parks.
Glimp also described new components at recently completed or in-progress playgrounds: access ramps, an accessible “merry-go-round” (an omni-spinner), molded bucket safety swings and sensory play walls. He said staff will send the inventory to the Office of Communications to update park-specific web pages.
Commissioner Bob Robinson asked about a water leak at Firefighters Memorial Park; Glimp said crews found a cracked lateral fitting and repaired it. Commissioner Jones asked whether the bonded rubber surfacing is wheelchair accessible; Glimp replied that the bonded rubber surface is considered wheelchair accessible.
The presentation concluded with commissioners thanking staff and expressing support for increasing inclusive features at more parks.
